My name is Joshua. I’m a third-year digital film student with experience in creating online advertising content, music videos, short films. Above all, my desire as Vice-President is to alleviate the financial struggles students face on a day to day basis. Through speaking and listening to students these past couple weeks, I’ve found areas of improvement in the following aspects:
Free printing for design school students:
I’m aware of how challenging this task is. However, I feel it would be beneficial to Design School students who require the printing facilities frequently for their courses, such as those studying fashion, fashion promotion, illustration and graphic design, etc. Through collaboration with the President and Vice of Design, I aim to ensure the needs of the frequently printing students are met. While, for non-design students, perhaps a system allowing students to get free credit worth up to £30 or more, renewed monthly, will make it easier for us to print our work without worrying about the costs.
Ravensbourne Magazine:
The magazine will predominantly highlight and promote you and your work, with an emphasis on Final Major Projects. Whether it be films, graphic design or clothing brands and promotional videos, the magazine will have an online component accessible by everyone, including industry professionals and financiers.
Reform/change the cross-institutional elective - Unit X:
Many second-year students have complained about this aspect of their courses and how they feel it doesn’t benefit them in their studies or projects. This time would be better spent by having industry professionals that are related to the student’s course coming in to offer students opportunities to build relationships with possible future employers and creating work experience or industry placements for students.
Improve communication between courses:
Collaboration is a significant component of all courses here. Yet for many students, the process of working with other students outside of their study area is a difficult one. We aren’t being encouraged enough to collaborate with other students from different courses which is limiting our creative potential. It will be great to have more avenues for students to collaborate and share opportunities with other students from various courses throughout all three years of their study.
Better communication within the uni (between course leaders and students):
As it stands, the information that students receive from the representatives is not always in its entirety, and some departments hear about things before others. As I have experienced, many students hear about things from other students or other departments. Many film students I have spoken to were unaware that we get discounts from rental houses, and I believe this needs to be explained to prop houses and locations for them. This Ravensbourne discount would go a long way in aiding their projects.
Conclusion:
I feel that with all these changes put in place, and many more ideas I have, I can truly help the students of Ravensbourne improve their experience here and make this an unforgettable time.
